#LAMARCAESCAPES Santander by Prisca Pérez Pla

SANTANDER: The coastal capital of the region of Cantabria is easily accesible by car, only 4 hours away from Madrid. It is well-known for its surfing, its seafood and gorgeous beaches and contrasting forests. On your drive there, don't forget to stop at the emblematic Hotel Landa Burgos for an added trip bonus. Discover this wellness guide by Prisca Pérez Pla.

WHAT TO DO: You can do everything, but the main attractions are surf and golf. Somo and Langre beaches are the perfect stage to get started in that sport, since there are many great surf schools. The most well-known and recommended is Escuela Cántabra de Surf. If you’d like a nice instructor with a lot of patience, without a doubt it would be my brother, Nicolás. He left his life in Madrid to come here to become a surf professor and to enjoy the simple life.

If we talk about golf, Pedreña can be considered as the mecca of this sport. The best player in history, Seve Ballesteros, came from this golf course and even designed some holes himself. The highlight of the course is hole 14. From its green, you can see the whole bay of Santander.

Another activity that is highly popular is going to the beach and spending the ENTIRE day there. As an interesting fact, there are no chiringuitos here. We are more of a cooler, an umbrella, beach tennis, surfboards, a book, a good playlist and a sweatshirt in case it gets chilly. The best time at the beach begins at 7pm, when the sun goes down and the ocean is filled with surfers.

My favorite spots are: Latas Beach, Torres de Somo’s downhill, Langre, Galizano and the tip of Puntal. You can get to all of these walking, and the best is the contrast between forest and sea.

There are also incredible hikes. My favorite and must visit every year for our guests at home is El Faro Del Caballo in Santoña. It’s 14 km and 763 stairs. Not recommended for those who have vertigo.

If the weather’s not good, a great plan is to go to Centro Botín, designed by the architect Renzo Piano. The Palace of the Magdalena, Camello beach, Mouro Island, and the Sardinero beach are other things you cannot miss!

WHERE TO EAT: Places here are not fancy, but they do stand out for the quality of their raw materials.

La Bombi: Best seafood cocktail (salpicón de marisco) and crab in the world!

Pan de Cuco: My only temptation to put a pause on my vegan lifestyle. ;) Everything is great and it’s really nice to have a drink at the terrace after the beach.

Asador El Tronky: Grilled sardines and “rabas" are the best. Rabas are the squid of the south.

Bodega del Riojano

La Caseta de Bombas: Grilled fish and eco meats.

Cañadío Santander

Regma: There’s no summer without Regma! Their ice creams are beyond comparison. My favorite is nougat (turrón) and cheesecake.

WHERE TO SHOP: In my opinion, the best multi brand stores are here (Sanhattan).

It’s worth noting @perchasantander: Araceli, the owner, is the person with more taste and fashion sensibility I have ever met. You must come here and buy timeless pieces that will last forever.

@delrosaalamarilloshop: The best, where you will find amazing pieces.

@petrabotin: Available at Lab Lamarca and Percha. Created by Julia Martín & Belén Botín. It’s a local Santander brand that’s starting out but soon will be well-known internationally. Their pieces have as much promise as the owners. Belén Botín is not only designer and Creative Director, but is also an almost pro surfer.

WHERE TO STAY:

Hotel Torres de Somo

La Posada de Langre

Hotel Real Santander

Hotel Mies de Villa

If you want to see pretty places, the houses decorated by Santander interior designer Memi Escarzaga are it.

WHY WE LOVE IT: I am not objective because I am devoted to this place. When I was little, it wasn’t fun to come here because it wasn’t the place “where my friends went”, but throughout the years it has become my escape route. Life is simple here. There’s time to enjoy yourself, your family, nature, and to be entertained without too much and to be bored, which sometimes is good.

As one of my brothers told me once: “Fun needs to cost 0, simply with what you have and who you’re with.” Here we have the sea, long beaches, incomparable food and incredible company. As the saying goes: “The woman like the sardine, must be from Santander” (“La mujer como la sardina ha de ser Santanderina”). Plus, the two “Santanderinas” with more class are Lucía Lantero and her NGO @aymy_losninosdehaiti and @eltatorjabato, the best hostess and duchess of la Tierruca.
